Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile was finally launched on March 21, 2024, on iOS and Android. It’s quite the big news, given how over 50 million users pre-registered for the game. This comes four years after the release of the original Warzone as an addition to the original Call of Duty: Mobile. It introduces a game format that aligns with Warzone’s style.

Multi-platform sync

For the first time, in-game progress is shared between the mobile, PC and console versions of Warzone and Modern Warfare III. This means that you get to keep your game level, weapons and experience no matter where you play it from, as long as you use the same Activision ID to login.

Furthermore, content purchased in Modern Warfare III and Warzone is automatically transferred to Warzone Mobile. This means progress and rewards earned in one game will be available in the other.

Enhanced graphics experience for some

If you’ve got a powerful mobile device, you’re in for a treat in terms of graphics experience. On powerful devices you can enable Peak Graphics mode, which promises 2K gameplay and other enhancements, getting closer to what you’d experience on game consoles. Tough luck if your device is not powerful enough though.

Activision stated that in order to run Call of Duty Warzone Mobile on Android, users will need a device with at least 4GB of RAM and an Adreno 618 GPU or better (on iOS an M1 chip). This means the game requires a mid-range chipset, such as the Snapdragon 720G. Although the stated requirements specifically target Qualcomm processors, it appears that the game can also run on devices equipped with MediaTek or Exynos chipsets of similar performance. For example it also runs well on the Google Pixel 7 Pro, which has a Mali GPU.

But, in terms of graphics quality, the options are pretty limited for normal devices. You only get a few visual quality presets (minimum, low, medium, high, and peak) without no advanced settings. The Peak level isn’t available on Pixel 7 Pro though, even if it’s quite a powerful device.

Classic maps and new game modes

Warzone Mobile features two main battle royale maps: Verdansk and Rebirth Island. It also comes along with various multiplayer modes and game events (competitions / tournaments).

You can also create custom Battle Royale games on your mobile, if you’re able to gather a minimum of 25 participants. The release also includes popular multiplayer modes like Team Deathmatch and Domination on maps like Scrapyard and Shipment.

Large APK size

If you decide to install it, take into account that you’ll need a good data plan. The game initially starts with a 1.5 GB installation APK. That’s not all, after you finish the installation, it will ask to download an additional 5GB of data. So that’s almost 7GB, not taking into account any additional DLC.

Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile Reviews

First reviews started pouring in, and they’re not all that good. Right now the game stands at an average rating of 3.4 stars out of 10+ million installs. Most users complain about the graphics, absence of practice mode, no graphic settings and intermittent interruptions (which sound normal given the peak interest). Oh and crashes, lagging plus even more connectivity issues. Overall the impression is that even if they mention this to be the public release, it’s still similar to a beta version.

While the release of Call of Duty Warzone Mobile is a big event for Android users (and iOS), it remains to be seen if it will be accessible to a wide audience or limited to the upper mid-range devices. The high hardware requirements, large storage space required, and limited graphics options will definitely prevent the game from running optimally on budget phones.
