Games are a part of everyone’s life, there’s no escape. From the moment we’re born we’re basically “taught” by parents to play games, unknowingly seeding in our minds the bug of gaming. All throughout our lives we’ll have that bug sitting there, just waiting for the moment when it can attack and have you addicted to a game. Luckily we’re forced by daily chores (job, family) to suppress that need for playing, but as soon as we’re given the right opportunity gaming bug will attack.

Lately it has become more and more difficult to keep gaming under control, as your current phone is able to run games that consoles a few years back couldn’t. And thus a habit is born that “affects” most smartphone owners, whenever we have a bit of time (especially waiting for something such as a doctor’s appointment) we pull it out and start playing a game. I have yet to see someone that starts doing the To-Do list for next day. This is one of the reasons that casual games are so insanely popular. Take the empire behind the simple Angry Birds, or the one behind Candy Crush and thousand others – they’re popular because those games are easy to play in between those breaks that smartphone users have and are going to become part of that habit (i.e. when you have a bit of free time, pull out your phone and play X).

GAME ADDICTION

So you see, as a game developer you have the advantage of having the right audience just waiting there to devour your game. You’re lucky as you are selling a product that already has a market and you don’t need to educate your future clients. Think on the other hand what a toothbrush maker must do, it needs to educate the clients first that they need to brush regularly and blablabla, only after that being able to sell them the product. You on the other hand already have a large audience (as in billions) that is ready to make your game part of their gaming habit. There are only a few things that you must do to be sure you’ll get to tickle that gaming need billion others have:

• Have a game that doesn’t suck. Every new mother thinks her baby is the world’s cutest yet I have to see one that doesn’t look like Brad Pitt in that reverse-growing movie where he’s all wrinkled at birth – the same happens with game devs. They become so attached of the particular game they write that they’re blind to all its flaws. A good advice is to show that game to a honest friend from time to time.
• Don’t release and be done with it. It took so long to develop the game (from idea to result) that you’re eager to have it out there in the world and after a long Phewww you’re done with the game and on to the other because “No one releases a big hit game from the first try”. While it’s true that the best approach for releasing games is to release often, release early, you need to invest just a little bit of time in releasing correctly. My suggestion is to have a short plan (10-step plan if you’re into lists) and apply that to every game release. You can start with having a great icon, an optimized title and description, carefully select some representative screenshots and post a video (mandatory in my opinion).
• Publicize. Lastly, after your game listing looks great make sure to publicize it a bit. Start off with your friends, all of them. Share the game via all your social networks and encourage your friends to leave reviews (it counts to have them). Next try to contact game reviewers, I know it is a tedious task but get a list and start contacting them. You don’t need to do it all at once, but just have a habit of doing something every day. Aside sites that publish games there are other places you can have your game posted at. There are forums (most game development forums have sections for showcasing games), Facebook groups, Google+ communities even Twitter groups. If your game is good you can even consider contacting YouTube gamecasters and pitch them the idea of doing a game review.

My suggestion, as stated above, is to have a short written plan with what to do for the game release, from publishing to having a great presentation page and finally to publicizing. This way you can re-use these ideas and fine-tune them later down the road with other game releases you’ll have. How about Facebook communities? Well, it’s not difficult to find them, just do a simple search on facebook for groups that contain the words “game review” and you’ll find them by the dozen. Same goes for Google+ communities, Twitter groups and Youtube channels of game reviewers (just don’t try to pitch PewDiePie as he’s into other types of games).

Some of the websites mentioned in the big list of Android game review sites are big names (i.e. Mashable) and my suggestion would be to try and not contact those unless you have a premium game.
